18 Summers: Embrace the Time Together With These Activities

(5 min read)  I recently heard someone say we only get 18 to 20 summers with our kids or grandkids. Then they are off to start their own journeys. Time is precious, and the summer is the perfect time for us to create lasting memories and enjoy quality time together.  Whether you’re seeking adventure, intellectual stimulation, or culinary delights, there’s a wide array of activities that cater to the whole family. Here are a couple of our family favorites.

1. Nature Walks

Immerse yourself in nature by going on family nature walks or hikes. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and explore local parks, trails, or even your own backyard. Encourage your children to observe and interact with the environment, discovering fascinating plants, animals, and natural wonders. Bring along a magnifying glass, binoculars, or a camera to enhance the experience. Nature walks provide an excellent opportunity to teach kids about the environment, ecosystems, and the importance of conservation. Make it an educational adventure by researching the flora and fauna you encounter and discussing their significance. Engage in fun activities like scavenger hunts, identifying different species of birds or trees, or even creating a nature journal to document your findings.  We have been using this app a lot recently, and it is pretty amazing.   Seek by iNaturalist – https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/seek_app . It helps you identify plants and animals by photographing them with your phone.

 2. Library Visits

Libraries are treasure troves of knowledge and imagination, offering a wealth of resources for all ages. Take your family on regular visits to the local library during the summer months. Encourage your kids to explore various sections, from children’s books to fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels. Engage their minds and foster a love for reading by helping them choose books that they like.  Libraries are also great when it might be just a little too hot to be outside.   Many libraries organize summer reading programs that motivate children to read and offer exciting incentives. Attend storytelling sessions or participate in book clubs where your family can share their reading experiences with others. Additionally, libraries often host workshops or events related to arts and crafts, science experiments, and cultural activities, providing opportunities for hands-on learning and socializing with other families in the community.

3. Family Cookouts

One of the quintessential summer activities is a family cookout. Fire up the grill, gather your loved ones, and enjoy a delicious outdoor feast. Involve everyone in the process, from planning the menu to preparing and grilling the food. Let each family member contribute their signature dish or experiment with new recipes together. Make the cookout even more enjoyable by incorporating fun games or activities.

4. Beach Time

We grew up going to the beach every summer for one week with the whole family… parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents.   Those were some of my most memorable times as a kid. Going to the beach with your family is an excellent summer activity. It provides an opportunity for quality bonding time. As you build sandcastles, splash in the waves, or relax under the sun, you can engage in conversations, laughter, and shared experiences that strengthen family relationships and create lasting memories. Additionally, the beach offers a diverse range of activities suitable for everyone in the family. Whether it’s swimming, surfing, beach volleyball, or collecting seashells, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. These activities promote physical fitness, coordination, and an active lifestyle while providing an escape from the daily routine.

This summer, make it a priority to engage in fun activities that bring your family closer together. Nature walks, library visits, family cookouts, and the beach offer a diverse range of experiences that cater to everyone’s interests. Embrace the season’s warmth and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime. I hope everyone is having a great summer.   And remember, time is precious have fun.
